LUMBERTON – Public Schools of Robeson County (PSRC) Migrant Education Program leaders took center stage at the NCASA Conference this week, presenting innovative strategies for supporting migrant students and their families.
“We are proud of the commitment to excellence our Migrant Education Program team has exhibited in an effort to ensure academic success and a sense of community for all our Migrant students and their families,” said Philip Oxendine, PSRC Director of Federal Programs.
The session, titled "Building Trust is Key to Success: PSRC Migrant Education Program's Approach to Serving Migrant Families," was led by Oxendine, Multilingual Learner Lead Teacher Sandra Lopez, and Migrant Recruiter Maria Hilario-Patricio.
The presentation focused on the program’s approach to addressing the unique challenges faced by migrant students, including frequent relocations, language barriers, and health concerns.
Key strategies discussed at the session included:
● Educating school staff about the needs of migrant students.
● Engaging migrant families through events that highlight available resources.
● Providing tutoring and summer services to support academic achievement.
These efforts have resulted in a remarkable 50% increase in student participation over the past 18 months, earning the program recognition for excellence at the state level.
PSRC remains committed to building trust within the community, conducting home visits, and collaborating with local organizations to ensure the success of migrant students and create an inclusive educational environment.
