SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS

ROBESON COUNTY — The Public Schools of Robeson County honors PSRC Board of Education members during School Board Appreciation Month.

January is School Board Appreciation Month, and the school district has celebrated its board members in various ways throughout the month to express heartfelt gratitude for their dedication and hard work.

The Board of Education of the Public Schools of Robeson County is made up of eleven members, eight of whom are elected by district and three at-large members. They are elected on a non-partisan basis during spring primary elections of even-numbered years. Terms are for four years.

“We have a wonderful board of individuals committed to the success of our students, staff and school district,” said PSRC Superintendent Dr. Freddie Williamson.

“They make thoughtful and challenging decisions, ask critical questions, and work tirelessly to advocate for all students and staff. Their unwavering support for the district is greatly appreciated and has been the driving force of our school district’s progress,” he added.

School board members play a vital role in shaping the future of education within their communities. They adopt and implement policies that provide structure and guidance for schools, advocate tirelessly for the success and well-being of all students, and help steer the vision and direction of the school district. Through their leadership, they ensure that resources are allocated effectively, educational standards are upheld, and every student has access to opportunities that support their growth and achievement. Their work is critical in driving the district’s overall success and progress.

PSRC Board of Education members share the most rewarding parts of the job

John Simmons, PSRC Board of Education Vice Chairman and District 1 Representative

"The need to help our kids get the best education they possibly can stirred me to join the Board of Education for the Public Schools of Robeson County. Seeing the joy on the faces of our students when they achieve their goals—whether it’s graduating high school, college, or pursuing their dream career—keeps me motivated every day. The most rewarding part of serving on the board has been bringing the Career Technical School to life. It had been in the planning stages for years, and seeing it finally become a reality is incredibly rewarding. One memorable moment for me while serving on the board was becoming board chairman and uniting the board as one team with one goal. That sense of teamwork and shared purpose is something I’m truly proud of. I want to encourage students, teachers and parents to always trust in God and never stop believing."

Melissa Ocean, PSRC Board of Education District 2 Representative

"I was inspired to become a school board member to serve and make the best decisions for the children of Robeson County. The children have kept me inspired. The most rewarding part of serving on the Board of Education fof the Public Schools of Robeson County is knowing that our district is expanding and growing. Our children are learning and thriving. One memorable moment during my time on the board was when I, along with my fellow board members, received the Silver Bell Award from the North Carolina School Boards Association. Students, teachers and parents, thank you for believing in me and allowing me to serve our community."

Dr. Linda Emanuel, PSRC Board of Education District 3 Representative

"As a former educator, I wanted to give back to the students and citizens of the Public Schools of Robeson County by serving as a board member. Seeing the progress of our building programs and the dedication of our inspiring staff keeps me motivated. Recognizing the accomplishments of our students, teachers, and staff has been the most rewarding part of my time on the board. A memorable moment from my time on the board has been being part of the team that made the vision of a new technology high school come to life—from the initial idea to breaking ground and beginning construction. Thank you for your vote of confidence. It has been my honor to serve you and be a part of this incredible educational community."

Terry Locklear, PSRC Board of Education District 4 Representative

"I was inspired to join the school board by my deep-rooted commitment to education and my desire to positively impact the lives of students and families in our community. As a parent, educator, and member of the Lumbee Tribe, I have always been passionate about fostering opportunities for all children to succeed academically and socially. My motivation comes from witnessing the resilience of our teachers’ dedication, as well as the opportunity to advocate for policies that enhance equity, innovation, and support for all learners. Knowing that current efforts will soon net tangible outcomes is the most rewarding aspect. It is fulfilling to work collaboratively with educators, families, and community members to address challenges and celebrate successes that impact the future of our district. I extend my sincerest gratitude to all those who have supported me, and I am committed to winning over those who have not. Stakeholder feedback is the driving force behind every question I pose and every vote I cast. Students: I am here to serve you; your potential inspires me. The impact you make is evident now. However, I hope to serve as an inspiration. One day, you can become involved in leadership and significantly impact this community over the coming years. Faculty and Staff: Your steadfast dedication is the foundation of our district’s success. I cannot thank you enough. Parents and Community Members: Your input is invaluable. Let’s commit to creating an environment where all children can thrive. Together, we can achieve remarkable milestones, and I look forward to continuing to work toward success for our district."

Craig Lowry, PSRC Board of Education District 5 Representative

"My belief that I could help students and staff improve our educational system inspired me to join the board. With prior knowledge of how our system works, I’ve always enjoyed helping people reach their goals. That keeps me motivated every day. Seeing both teachers and students succeed has been the most rewarding part of my service. Another highlight is witnessing the beginning construction of our new Career and Technical Education and Planetarium Complex. I’m particularly proud of the new athletic complex at Red Springs High School, the collaborative working relationships among school board members, and the needs-based grants our school system has received. It has been and continues to be my pleasure to serve on the Board of Education for PSRC. I will always strive to make decisions in the best interest of all students and staff. Thank you for your continued support—I remain committed to doing what is right for our school system."

Crystal Monroe, PSRC Board of Education District 6 Representative

"The inspiration to join the school board stemmed from the students and staff of the school system, with the ambition of establishing a supportive learning environment for children and a positive workplace for staff. Participating in initiatives that improve curriculum, support teachers, and foster inclusive learning environments has brought deep fulfillment to me in this role. Being just a phone call away for parents and staff when they have concerns has been incredibly rewarding. Thank you for your trust, collaboration, and dedication to the success of our schools. Together, we are working to build a better educational experience for everyone."

Bradley Phillips, PSRC Board of Education Chairman and District 7 Representative

"What inspired me to initially seek election was my family. I was a product of PSRC, and so is my son. I wanted to do my part to carry the torch and ensure our school system continues moving in the right direction. Seeing a project through from start to finish and witnessing the end result positively impact our students and staff has been very rewarding. A memorable moment for me on the board was attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony for our area’s first playground where the equipment is wheelchair-accessible and ADA-compliant. To the parents and community members, thank you for supporting me to be your voice in our education system and for trusting me to make the right decisions for all students in Robeson County."

Tre’ Britt, PSRC Board of Education District 8 Representative and Board Vice Chairman

"The opportunity to serve staff and students of PSRC motivates me every day. Being a teacher for 10 years, I know exactly what they go through on a daily basis, and I am a product of PSRC. The countless conversations and helping not only our employees but our students as well also motivates me to serve because they deserve the best. The most rewarding parts of this work have been seeing an employee succeed and being able to be the voice they need, along with supporting our students. Recognizing outstanding work and knowing that the person or group being celebrated represents PSRC fills me with pride. The groundbreaking of the new technology school was a memorable moment during my time on the board. I’m in this seat for every employee and student of PSRC. This isn’t my seat—it belongs to the great citizens of District 8. Keep me in your prayers, and if I can assist in any way, don’t hesitate to let me know."

Kristy Fields, PSRC Board of Education At-Large Representative

"Serving my community and being a voice for others inspired me to run for election to become a board member. It is my duty to serve and to give back as an investment to the place I call home. Having an opportunity to meet more of the PSRC employees who make a difference in the lives of our children has been the most rewarding part of this role. This is my first tenure, and I enjoy celebrating the successes of students and staff. I want students, parents and teachers to know that your voice and concerns are my first priority. I appreciate the opportunity to serve the people of Robeson County. This community has paved the way for so many who have become successful, and I am confident we will continue the legacy."

Vonta Leach, PSRC Board of Education At-Large Representative and Board Chairman

"I am a proud product of PSRC, and I believe in investing in the communities that have invested in me. My mission is to serve, advocate, and be a champion for all children. Let’s keep working together to make Robeson County stronger, one student at a time."

Henry Brewer, PSRC Board of Education At-Large Representative

"My inspiration to run as a board member was to improve the quality of education in Robeson County Schools. My motivation comes from tackling the challenges we face that hinder this process. Seeing our credibility and graduation rate improve in the state of North Carolina has been very rewarding. The low economic condition in Robeson County requires micro-managing every decision, but the progress we’ve made is worth every effort. A memorable moment for me is the groundbreaking of a new Career and Technical Education school in Pembroke, NC. It was a milestone achievement for our community. The support I’ve received has encouraged me and made it possible to work with our board to stay focused in a positive direction. Our staff and teachers are the best in the state of North Carolina, and I’m grateful for their dedication."
