📋 INFORMATION ITEMS 📋

PSRC Board of Education members received updates on 10th Day Membership and 2023-2024 District Data. PSRC Assistant Superintendent of Auxiliary Services Bobby Locklear also reminded board members of the district’s uniform crisis plan in place for all schools. Administrators and school staff must update the plans each year and continue to prioritize school safety.

Additionally, Dr. Debra Dowless, PSRC Director of Curriculum and Instruction, told board members about a new feature that can be used during Math and Science End-of-Grade testing. The feature will allow students to have questions read aloud to them through headphones and digital software if they so choose. The feature will be available as an option and is not mandatory. In addition, the feature is already compatible with multiple programs the district already has in place such as Canvas.

Board members also took a look at trends in the school district through 2023-2024 District Data.

Eight schools improved a letter grade, those schools were where the district really focused and monitored. However, eight schools experienced a decline.

“Part of our plan that’s already in place is how do we increase the monitoring in classrooms in every building. The ongoing conversation that our principals are instructional leaders, we’re pushing that to happen even more. We’ve added some additional Central Office staff that will help us get in the building,” said PSRC Superintendent Dr. Freddie Williamson.

“At the end of the day, eight up, eight down is a concern. But, it’s the issue of monitoring — how do we get more coverage in classrooms and we will work with principals on that,” he added.

Williamson said it will take time to close gaps and the 80/20 formula used to determine school performance grades works against high-poverty districts.

“What we also look at is how we’re trending. We’re trending north. We’re going north. Is it going to happen overnight? No, but we are getting there,” he said. “This is a work in progress.”
