Public Schools of Robeson County leadership received confirmation on Friday, January 10, 2025, that a recent cybersecurity incident involving PowerSchool impacted district student and teacher data. PowerSchool is a student information system (SIS) used by districts across the country. This incident was not isolated to North Carolina, affecting most states throughout the country as well as internationally.
We are working closely with the NCDPI and PowerSchool to determine the number of individuals impacted by the PowerSchool breach. As we learn more about how we have been impacted, we will communicate additional information to parents and educators. The safety and security of our students and staff is a top priority. Our school district will continue its work to secure student and teacher data across our networks each day and we take incidents like these very seriously.
On December 28, 2024, PowerSchool became aware of a cybersecurity incident that began on December 19, 2024, involving unauthorized access to student and teacher data. The data breach occurred when the credentials of a PowerSchool contract employee were compromised. PowerSchool has shared that the threat has been contained and that the compromised data was not shared and has been destroyed. PowerSchool is working with law enforcement to monitor the dark web for any data exposure.
The Public Schools of Robeson County will work alongside NCDPI and PowerSchool, to ensure that all required notifications are conducted.
