- All school rules are in effect at graduation rehearsal and commencement. Anyone suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be escorted from the premises and will forfeit their participation in the graduation ceremony, in addition to being charged accordingly.
- Seniors must abide by the dress code for commencement as follows:
- Seniors must be present at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke in the Annex Center no later than 8:15 a.m. A final role check will be taken at 8:20 a.m. Any student not present at that time is considered a “NO SHOW,” and his/her name will be removed from the ceremony.
- a)Ladies -- dresses cannot extend below the gown; white, black, light brown, or silver dress shoes only; high heel shoes cannot exceed 3 inches, fleshed-colored hose only; no extra jewelry or dangling earrings; no corsage.
- b)Gentlemen – white or light-colored dress shirt; dark tie, dark pants, dark dress shoes (no sneakers or boots); no dangling earrings or excessive jewelry.
- c)Caps are worn with the point in front and tilted slightly down in the front (not positioned on the back of the head; plan hairstyles accordingly). Tassel is worn on the right side between the front and side position.
- d)Gowns must be pressed; use COOL iron or they will melt!
- e)No balloons are allowed inside the gymnasium. Limit gifts for seniors to flowers or small tokens.
- f)Caps and gowns that have been “decorated,” or any other item of dress or accessory that is not in keeping with the traditional attire of a formal graduation ceremony, will result in the student being pulled from the ceremony. The guidelines are simple and straightforward. We ask all to abide by them and not cause unnecessary disruptions as the Senior Class of 2023 prepares to walk in for commencement.
7. Seniors must remain quiet while waiting in the line-up.
8. Every person admitted to the commencement must have a ticket, including children and infants. It is requested that small children under 5 years of age are not brought to Commencement as they usually find the ceremony long and tedious, and their crying is clearly a distraction to the ceremony. Seating is limited; we encourage you to choose guests who will find the graduation ceremony meaningful because of their emotional attachment to you.
9. Graduates and guests need to allow sufficient time to be seated before the beginning of commencement. The doors will open for guests at 8:30 a.m. The doors will be closed, and no one will be admitted after 9:00 a.m. Guests are requested to remain for the entire ceremony.
10. School personnel and law enforcement officers will be on duty throughout the commencement ceremony to assist guests as needed and to help maintain the dignity of the occasion. Any disturbance during the ceremony may result in removal and legal charges.
11. Guests will not be allowed to approach the stage to take photographs or to videotape. Guests may take pictures and videotape from their seats. Professional photos will be available for those who wish to purchase them.
12. Seniors are held responsible for the conduct of themselves and their guests. Parents/Guardians are asked to take an active role in deciding who actually receives a ticket for the ceremony and to ensure that all of the graduate’s guests understand the standard of decorum that a commencement ceremony demands. It is our experience that even one obnoxious guest can ruin the ceremony for those unfortunate enough to be seated near them. We ask parents and guests to refrain from yelling out, screaming, clapping, or acting in any inappropriate manner as names are being called. Diplomas are NOT awarded to seniors who conduct themselves in an inappropriate manner. Parents may make an appointment with the principal to pick up the diploma during the summer if diplomas are not awarded due to inappropriate actions at commencement.
12. Every effort has been made to ensure that each senior’s name is spelled correctly on the diploma. Remember that it is a legal document, and it must match the student’s legal name.
13. Graduates receive only one (1) copy of their diploma. Diplomas should be stored in a secure place (such as a fireproof box) as graduates may have to provide them to prospective employers. SPHS does not keep a copy of any diplomas on file. If, for any reason, the document is lost, stolen, or damaged and you need to obtain another copy, contact:
14. All seniors are required to go through Scribbles and order their final transcript if they are attending a University or Community College. Delivery of a student’s final transcript to a Community College or University for enrollment in the Fall of 2023 is highly suggested to be hand delivered or mailed requiring a signature through certified mail. No transcripts will be faxed.
